CloseStrive Toward Braille Literacy with Rolling Into Place
At APH, we pride ourselves in our ability to provide products for students who are blind or low vision. Rolling into Place is an interactive storybook that helps develop fine motor skills as well as encourages students to continue striving toward braille literacy.
Rolling Into Place is different from other storybooks thanks to its interactive elements. Students move a little hook/loop ball along the pages as they move through the book. This helps students develop better control and precision over their hand movements.
Alongside the hand movements, Rolling Into Place assists students with their directional skills. The story prompts them to move the ball in different ways on each page, which gives students the opportunity to work on their basic direction and movement concepts.
Product Manager Rachel Bishop explains how Rolling Into Place is a great tool for students who are working on the skills needed for reading braille, “Hand-skills will be needed to follow the path and move the ball, and these become important when the child starts to learn braille.” Rachel adds, “It also introduces directional concepts, like right and left, which are concepts that the students will also need to understand when reading braille from left to right on a page.”
Rolling Into Place brings together multiple methods of storytelling: tactile, auditorial, and visual. This makes Rolling Into Place a great tool for teaching all students—not just the students with low vision or blindness. The story is engages its readers outside of its foundational work toward building braille literacy.
