I am excited to introduce the new edition of APH's Family Life Catalog. The products featured in this catalog are designed for families with visually impaired children, including infants, preschoolers, elementary students, high school students, or young adults.
For 150 years, APH has been helping blind children learn, grow, and achieve independence. Our commitment includes identifying needs, designing products to meet those needs, field testing prototypes, manufacturing and distributing products. APH also offers numerous services useful to parents or teachers of blind children.

APH Services for Families

Having a child who is visually impaired or blind may be a challenging and life-changing experience; however, you're not alone! There are dozens of agencies in your state and across the country to help you provide your child with the best education and rehabilitation services possible.

This section lists services provided by the American Printing House for the Blind (APH). A Resources for Families appendix in the rear of the catalog lists other agencies that may be helpful to you.

Services from APH
The American Printing House for the Blind is committed to providing quality services for the families of children with visual impairments. This catalog for families is one of those services. APH's Department of Research partners with universities and other organizations to assure that the products we create are appropriate and beneficial for your child.

Early Childhood
The "Babies Count: National Registry for Children with Visual Impairment from Birth to Three Years" is coordinated by APH's Early Childhood Project Leader. Babies Count identifies children across the country, birth to three, who are blind and visually impaired. Information collected through this project guides our development of products and services for young children, as well as identifies trends for the future. Training Events Across the U.S.
APH is proud to sponsor a series of National Instructional Partnership workshops and training events around the country. These workshops focus on curriculum areas and topics vital to the education of children who are blind and visually impaired. Nationally known experts in the field of education and rehabilitation partner with APH staff to create powerful learning experiences. We invite and encourage parents to attend APH training events. If there is an adult in your family who is visually impaired, you may wish to receive APH's Daily Living Catalog. This catalog contains a wealth of daily living products, including talking electronics, braille writing materials, low vision aids, and more.

What Is the Federal Quota Program?
The federal Act to Promote the Education of the Blind provides funds for accessible educational materials for eligible students. These federal funds are available to organizations in each state to provide materials for students working at less than college level. The organizations may be state departments of education, residential schools, or agencies for the blind.

Is My Child Eligible for Federal Quota?
To be eligible for materials purchased with Federal Quota funds, students MUST meet these requirements:
-- meet the definition of blindness - "central visual acuity of 20/200 or less in the better eye with correcting glasses or a peripheral field so contracted that the widest diameter of such field subtends an angular distance no greater than 20 degrees; or visual performance reduced by a brain injury or dysfunction when visual function meets the definition of blindness as determined by an eye care specialist or neurologist."
-- "be enrolled in a formally organized public or private non-profit educational program of less than college level"
-- be enrolled with the registering school or agency on the first Monday in January

How Does the Quota Program Work?
A national census taken each January by APH determines the number of students eligible to receive materials purchased using Federal Quota funds. The federal money allotted for Quota each year is then divided among the participating schools and agencies based on the number of students registered. The money does not go to the students themselves, but is credited to Federal Quota accounts administered by Ex Officio Trustees who oversee the funds for their school or agency. The Trustee oversees which APH products to purchase with Quota money to best serve all visually impaired students in their system.

Who Are the Ex Officio Trustees?
Each organization participating in the Federal Quota Program has a designated Ex Officio Trustee entrusted with administering the program within his or her system. Each state, and territory, and possession of the U.S. has at least one Ex Officio Trustee.

Is My Child Registered for Federal Quota?
There are several ways to find out if your child is registered.
-- Ask at your Individualized Educational Program (IEP) or Individualized Family Services Plan (IFSP) meeting. Your service provider should be aware that Federal Quota funds are available, and can tell you if your child qualifies.
-- Contact the state department of education (if your child attends a public or private school) or the state residential school for the blind.
-- Contact your Ex Officio Trustee for more information. To learn the name of the Ex Officio Trustee serving your organization, check the APH website at www.aph.org/fedquotpgm/trustees.html and then click on your state, or contact the APH Field Services Department at 800-223-1839, extension 257.

Since 1858 the American Printing House for the Blind (APH) has been creating unique products for people who are visually impaired or blind. APH is a nonprofit organization. We are the oldest company in the United States manufacturing products for blind people and are the largest organization of our kind in the world. In 2008, we celebrated 150 years of service.

Locating Products
Products in this catalog are organized by subject area, such as "Books for Children." There is an index in the back of the catalog that includes variations of the product name as well as the exact name.

Multiply Disabled Children
Most products in this catalog are appropriate for children and adults with multiple disabilities, including deafblindness.

Prices and Types of Funds Accepted
All items in this catalog can be purchased with regular funds, such as checks or credit cards. Most items can also be purchased with Federal Quota funds through an Ex Officio Trustee (see "How to Order" for more information on this process). Prices are subject to change without notice.

Alphabet Scramble is a read-aloud storybook promoting emergent and early literacy skills. The rhyming story tells of a "family" of alphabet letters as each sets out to explore the page. Building On Patterns, Color Me Book
Color Me is an 11 1/2 x 5 1/2 inch soft covered book containing 40 raised-line pictures to be colored. Each page contains one or two raised-line drawings of an item that is usually the same color as the braille/print color word at the top of the page. Each year APH sponsors a juried art competition and exhibition designed exclusively for blind and visually impaired artists of all ages. From the hundreds of entries received, works are chosen for exhibition at APH's Annual Meeting and on our website. Award winners are selected in each of nine categories.

Submissions to APH InSights may include sculpture, pottery, weaving, photographs, prints, paintings, etc. Entries are judged by professionals from the field of the arts. Artwork is judged on originality of concept, expressive use of media, and artistic excellence.

Quick Pick Math
This fun math game consists of a large plastic packet containing fifty large print/braille cards. The front and back of each card contains a math question and four possible answers.
To play, a student inserts the included tool in one of four holes in the front of the plastic packet. If the answer is correct, the card will slide out. If the answer is incorrect, the card will not pull out, and the student should try again.

Quick Pick Counting
This game is designed to help young children learn to count to 12 with raised-line symbols and braille numbers. Can also be used with developmentally delayed students.
Game includes fifty one-sided game cards in a plastic packet and is played as described above in Quick Pick Math. The student counts the tactile symbols and then reads the correct braille number. Each State Maps Collection is a set of embossed and printed outline maps for a region of the United States. Use as starting points for lessons on individual states. Swirly Mat(TM) Sets
Durable, non-toxic Swirly Mats come in two sets: Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI) and Functional Vision Assessment (FVA). The mats in the CVI set are less complex and are designed for students with cortical vision impairments. During the first year APH's popular Braille+ was sold, a one-year warranty against manufacturer defects plus free downloads for all software updates was included at no additional charge. Braille+ One-Year Hardware Maintenance Agreement (HMA)
The annual HMA protects you from unanticipated maintenance cost. Repairs are covered, including parts and labor, for 12 months beyond the first year-limited warranty that was included with your initial purchase. The HMA must be purchased while the product is covered under the standard warranty. Batteries and other accessories are not covered by the HMA.

Braille+ One-Year Software Maintenance Agreement (SMA) Download
The annual Software Maintenance Agreement (SMA) gives Braille+ owners unlimited software downloads for a period of one year. The American Printing House for the Blind
The history of the education of people who are blind is presented in our unique multi-media museum. Artifacts, photos, and electronic displays introduce the history of tactile alphabets, the braillewriter, and much more. All displays are accessible to people who are blind or visually impaired. A fascinating guided tour of APH's historic facility is also offered. Visitors will see the production of braille publications, the recording of Talking Books, and a demonstration of educational products. Advance reservations are required for groups of ten or more people.

Museum Hours -- 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. EST Monday-Friday, except holidays, and 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturdays. 
Tour Hours -- 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. EST Monday-Thursday, except holidays, Tour length: 1 to 1 1/2 hours.

Blind U.S. citizens are eligible to subscribe to these publications. If you are unable to pay the subscription rate for Readers Digest(R) or Newsweek(R), we invite you to subscribe free-of-charge. Contributions to defray the production costs are accepted. Gift subscriptions are available at the above rates. Non-U.S. citizens MUST pay the above subscription costs. Cassette editions require a Talking Book-type tape player. A Talking Book-type cassette tape player is designed to play specially recorded tapes. These players are available on a free loan basis from the library in your state that serves visually impaired or physically disabled readers.
APH offers several versions of Weekly Reader in both large print and braille. We offer: 2nd Grade, 3rd Grade, Senior (Grades 4th, 5th, and 6th), Current Events, and Current Science.
